Pentagon launching a new disability system

October 26, 2007

I picked this story up from Al’s Morning Meeting, which is an interesting site for journalists looking for story ideas.

“Pay attention to this story from The Navy Times about the Pentagon launching a new disability system.

This could make a big difference for veterans by cutting the time they wait for disability payments in half. The system could be operational in a month. The story says:
The Defense Department will soon unveil a new, streamlined disability evaluation system that, in tandem with the Department of Veterans Affairs, will replace the current cumbersome process with a single exam and single disability rating.

According to a copy of the plan obtained by Military Times and confirmed by Pentagon
officials, veterans medically retired from service will be able to apply for, and get, VA benefits immediately.

“Many customers are buying one for each side of the bed!”

THIS is funny ….. and scary.

Dee et al,

I was watching The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) last night.

Mickey Rourke had an interesting line, “Honest work? Whenever somebody tells you Honest Work, it means he’s got a shit job for ya.”

Anyhow, I started at Sheetz (GC) yesterday.

I’ll probably go back tomorrow.

Shea: Home again

October 20, 2007

To anyone who might be interested, I just got home Thursday evening after 7,679 miles in the old tub.  As you know, my first co-pilot, Lt Gitt drove from Harrisburg to BaltaFest.  Thanks  a mega-bunch to Mike and especially Sherry for raising the bar again.  The house and setting could not have been better.

From Ohio, Dan Hayden and I headed west to Denver.  We hauled across the midwest logging 735 and 790 miles for the first two days to Denver.  There we stayed with Smoller (thanks much, John for the hospitality)…for a day before heading westward again toward SLC.  Then on to Reno.  The weather could not have been better nor the landscape more specacular.  From Reno to Tahoe however, through the Donner Pass we hit a major snowstorm (blizzard?) that had the road closed overnight and we felt lucky to get through.  Once we got to the Sacramento Valley, we were once again blessed with stunning California weather.  Spent two wonderful nights at the Cotlers in Benicia…thank you so much!

Mole at reunion

Smoller, Curt and I took the ferry to Put-IN-Bay and as we walked around and tried different bars and restaurants, one that is a brewery held our attention for a short while. Just inside the front door was one of the Blues Brothers and I thought The Mole looked just fine posing with him.

Pat wants me to tell you that it’s a new camera, and he’s just learning how to use it, and he’s sure that Hog could have done better.  But, hey, it’s us, you guys!

Shea and traveling

October 14, 2007

Bill and Jani (sp) arrived on Wednesday afternoon, a sunny and clear day on the coast south of San Francisco. I met them on a road right on the beach. Got them checked into their room and paid a visit to my shop where the Ducati lives. Then it was off to the harbor and a sit down at the local brew pub for a couple of pints then across the street to a good local restaurant which sits on the pilings over the water with a view of the fishing and livein boats. Both of them ordered fresh fish plates with wayyy too much food and were stuffed beyond . . . .

A short walk out the pier to help dinner settle then a ride a couple of miles down the coast to a beach access parking lot where we hiked about one half mile across the field to see the sunset. Along the way we were visited by a large hunting owl that crisscrossed our path often.

At the beginning of road to the beach is a local pub that has this huge collection of beer cans and bottles and taps, a family sort of restaurant/pub that was swarming with young girls. The owner caters to the local girls softball teams which is appropriate since the fields are down the same road that we went to the beach.

After too much beer and food I escorted them to their room, early by most folks standards, about 9PM, and left them to get early to bed so they could get an early start on their drive to the L.A. area.

We were joined for the evening by my pool playing friend, Mac, who found the company stimulating and fun.

He missed them almost immediately and after leaving us after the pub, he called within minutes to tell them how good it was to meet them.

Good to see Bill and his journey which is going well and the car doing just fine. His friend Jani was a treat although we were not sure they would end the trip together, alive.

Reunion thanks from BJ

October 6, 2007

The site was wonderful and interesting with lots of extras all about to keep us all entertained.

Many thanks for your efforts and hard work.

My regret, besides not being able to visit with those that were not able to attend, is that there was beer remaining after we were all finished and gone and I am planning on getting in better beer drinking shape, (inspired by our friend Smoller), and doing more of my part in the future.

It really was great to see all of those that attended.

Thanks Stemples, BJBJBJB
